See Svalbard, Greenland & Iceland on our Polar Cruise

An illustrated itinerary of one of our many gay travel adventures. This information supplements our
shorter Overview of High Arctic Cruise.

Rich history and diverse wildlife color our exploration of the Svalbard Archipelago, before we cross to the massive glaciers and fjords of Greenland en route to the volcanic coast of Iceland.

--

Each day, we wake to the promise of new experiences: massive penguin colonies, remote Arctic communities, Viking ruins, spectacular fjords and panoramas of ice and water. Our ship was built in Scandinavia by the Russian Academy of Science for the express purpose of oceanic exploration, particularly suited to Polar Regions. They ship has a sophisticated stabilization system built into its ice-resistant and strengthened hulls. These ice cutters offer state of the art technology, are exceptionally stable, quiet and fast. The cabins are comfortable and the viewing areas are spacious and perfect for an Arctic exploration. The dining room can accommodate up to 110 passengers, the maximum allowed on board.

2-12: South across the Arctic Circle
--

The following is an example of a typical voyage, but each voyage is unique, based on the weather, seas and other factors.

We’ll explore the Svalbard Archipelago, racing as far north as Moffen Island, and visit the stunning Monaco Glacier and the nearby bird colonies. High above the Arctic Circle the remarkable archipelago of islands known as Svalbard, far to the north of Norway’s mainland, spans an area of about 62,000 square kilometers, approximately the size of Ireland or Tasmania. The largest island of Svalbard, Spitsbergen, feels the comparative warmth of the North Atlantic current and spends half of the year, including the time of our visit, clear of ice. The fjords along the west and north coasts are often teeming with extraordinary wildlife from the walrus to the great polar bear, and promise dazzling Arctic scenery.

After cruising along much of the coast of Spitsbergen and nearby islands we’ll cross the Greenland Sea to the northeast coast of Greenland, one of the world’s most pristine destinations. Along the way we’ll be looking for seabirds, marine mammals and polar bears. Weather and sea ice permitting, we aim to get into the Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord and later sail deep within the Scoresbysund, the largest fjord complex in the world and the birthplace of monstrous icebergs.

As we travel south, we will explore the stunning landscape of fjords on Greenland's eastern coast and visit ancient Greenlandic settlements and isolated Inuit communities that reveal this remote country’s rich cultural heritage.

Finally, our exploration takes us southeast, to the volcanic Westmann Islands of Iceland. Here in one of the world’s youngest archipelagos, just south of the mainland, we’ll see the results of a recent volcanic eruption that buried part of the town and harbor, and look across the sea at some of earth's newest islands. Our unforgettable journey concludes in Iceland's capital city of Reykjavik, leaving memories of the ice of Greenland, and the green of Iceland (well more than Greenland, anyway).Back to Top
