From the top of the Andes to the bottom of the Colca Canyon, we'll explore the rarely seen wonders of Peru. Overview |
|
Wings Over Peru Gay Tour Peru is filled with treasures, both natural and man made, but most travelers see only the highlights of Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu. We offer this tour for those who want to get off the beaten track and explore the other wonders of Peru. To get around we will use a combination of commercial and private aircraft. We will also stay at some of the finest hotels in South America, and learn why Peruvian cuisine has made it a must-visit destination for foodies from around the world. We start in Lima, where we get a museum tour led by its curator, and sample a couple of the city's finest restaurants. From Lima we fly north to Trujillo where we see evidence of cultures that pre-dated the Inca Kingdom by several centuries. Next we board our private small plane and (weather permitting) fly past Peru's highest peak, Huascaran, enroute to Paracas Bay, often called "the Galapagos of Peru" due to the amazing variety of wildlife and marine creatures. From our base at Paracas Bay we'll fly by light aircraft to the nearby Nazca Lines, ancient rock art visible only from the air. We next fly from the coast up to the prominent Andean city of Arequipa, where we have a guided tour of the Spanish-built cathedral. From Arequipa we drive to the Colca Canyon, which is as bright, varied and beautiful as the Grand Canyon. See condors in flight, vicunas grazing and a dazzling display of natural beauty. After a 2-night stay at a lovely new resort in Colca Canyon, we return to Arequipa to board our flight to Cusco. From there, we drive over a pass and down to the floor of the Sacred Valley, where we have lunch in a hilltop hacienda. The next day we'll take a train to the sacred site of Machu Picchu, where we will stay in the magnificent Sanctuary Lodge for a night. We'll have most of the next day free before we board what some consider the finest train in Latin America, the Hiram Bingham train, back toward Cusco. Our last full stop on the tour will be Cusco, but one last treat remains as we return to Lima the last morning and have a farewell banquet in one of South America's oldest homes, Casa Aliaga.
